Bayern assistant Danks: Kompany recovering well but no return yet

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is making progress in his recovery ahead of the team's away match in Mainz, assistant coach Aaron Danks said at a press conference on Friday.

Danks could not yet say whether the 40-year-old Belgian could resume his role as coach of the German football record champions after his collapse two weeks earlier and a bout of meningitis following the international break.

"I've had a few really good phone calls with Vince. He seems very positive and appears to be well on the way to a full recovery," Danks said. The assistant coach added that no date has been set yet for Kompany's return.

"The international break provides a good opportunity to reflect and see when he can return," he said, adding that everyone hopes that it will be as soon as possible.

Under the guidance of Kompany's assistant Danks, Bayern have won three and drawn one of their last four competitive matches.

Another win could follow on Saturday in Mainz, where Bayern suffered their last away defeat, a 2-1 loss in December 2024. Since then, Bayern have gone 30 away matches unbeaten, recording 22 wins and eight draws.

"We've got an important match on Saturday, and we want to round off this run with a good result. But it won't be easy. We know that," Danks said.

Four days after the 2-0 Champions League win at Atlético Madrid, there could be changes to the starting line-up.

"With a few players we need to look at workload and whether we rest them," Danks said.

Danks named Alphonso Davies, who still needs rest periods after several injuries, and said he could not play 90 minutes in a row several times. Germany international Jamal Musiala is back in team training after his muscle injury.

"But tomorrow's game comes too soon for him," Danks added.
