Lufthansa offset sharply higher jet fuel costs in the third quarter through increased ticket prices and strong performance in its maintenance and cargo businesses, allowing the airline group to boost its net profit by 30% to around €1.3 billion ($1.46 billion).

Lufthansa offset sharply higher jet fuel costs in the third quarter through increased ticket prices and strong performance in its maintenance and cargo businesses, allowing the airline group to boost its net profit by 30% to around €1.3 billion ($1.46 billion).

Fuel expenses rose by more than €500 million compared with the same period last year, but the group also benefited from one-off effects, Lufthansa said on Tuesday.

Adjusted operating profit, or adjusted EBIT, increased by 6% to around €1.4 billion, beating analysts' average expectations.

Chief executive Carsten Spohr nevertheless expects significantly higher fuel costs for the full year. Lufthansa now forecasts a total fuel bill of €9.3 billion, €600 million more than it had projected in August.
