German actor August Diehl, known internationally for his part in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, is to receive the Europa film award.

The 50-year-old is being honoured as one of Germany's most prominent character actors on the international stage, the Braunschweig International Film Festival (BIFF) announced on Thursday.

The award, worth €25,000 ($28,000), is the film festival's most lucrative prize. The actor is due to receive the award on November 14 as part of the BIFF.

In a statement, the festival said Diehl is an actor "who is just as closely associated with major Hollywood productions as he is with sophisticated art house cinema."

The range of roles he has played is particularly fascinating, the statement continued, "from the SS officer in Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds' to the resistance figure Franz Jägerstätter, and on to other historical characters such as Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin."

Diehl was born in Berlin in 1976 and made his film debut in the 1998 film "23." He made his international breakthrough in 2009 with his role in "Inglourious Basterds."

Alongside the Tarantino classic, in 2010 he also appeared in "Salt' alongside Angelina Jolie and in 2021's "The King's Man - The Beginning," which also starred Ralph Fiennes, Daniel Brühl and Stanley Tucci.

Diehl is also active as a theatre actor. A selection of the films in which Diehl has appeared is set to be screened at the Braunschweig Film Festival.
