Two gay men were attacked in the north-western German city of Bremen on their way home from the German Unity Day celebrations on Saturday evening due to their sexual orientation, police said, leaving both with minor injuries.
The two men, aged 29 and 33, were confronted by a group of around 10 people who hurled homophobic abuse at them in Arabic. When the 29-year-old tried to film the incident, members of the group attacked them with punches. The attackers fled on foot.
Police opened criminal proceedings on suspicion of incitement to hatred and causing grievous bodily harm. As homophobic offences are classified as hate crimes, the state security unit took over the investigation. Police are appealing for witnesses who can provide information about the perpetrators.
