Man confesses to running world's largest darknet drugs marketplace

A man accused of operating the world's largest online marketplace for drugs and medicines confessed to running the illegal site on the darknet at the start of his trial in Frankfurt on Monday.

The 31-year-old defendant admitted that he founded and operated the platform called Archetyp Market, describing it as "a great mistake."

German investigators, who estimate the site to have generated revenue of €330 million ($375 million) from around 600,000 customers around the world, say the platform was the largest of its kind before it was shut down in mid-2025.

The man was arrested in Barcelona by Spanish special forces in June last year, with further searches and arrests linked to the site carried out in Germany and abroad. The server infrastructure used to run the marketplace was based in the Netherlands, German criminal police said at the time.

A total of 3.2 million pills and 2.2 million tablets - including cannabis products, medicines and performance-enhancing drugs - as well as 326 litres of various drugs such as cocaine, heroin, crystal meth, fentanyl and crack were traded on the site, which was founded in November 2020, according to prosecutors.

The 31-year-old is believed to have run the platform alongside several moderators and earned around €20 million from the site.

The man faces between five and 15 years in prison for drug trafficking as part of a criminal organization. A confession is often seen as a mitigating factor. 

The Frankfurt regional court is expected to deliver a verdict in October.
