Customs officers inspect barbershops and hairdressers across Germany

German customs officers carried out inspections at barbershops and beauty salons on Saturday as part of the fight against undeclared work and wage dumping. 

More than 2,200 customs officers were deployed for the nationwide inspection campaign in the beauty and hairdressing sectors, according to Jens Ahland, spokesman for the Cologne Main Customs Office.

Barbershops were the focus of the inspections in and around the western German city.

These establishments frequently attract attention due to undeclared work, said Ahland. In some cases, employees were either not insured at all or inadequately insured, and wages were also below the minimum wage, he said. 

"We have also had cases of illegal employment and bogus self-employment," he added. 

Results of this Saturday's operation were not initially available.
