Kimmich feels special sense of responsibility after World Cup debacle

Germany captain Joshua Kimmich said that he feels a special sense of responsibility after a third consecutive disappointing World Cup.

"Looking back, these three World Cup eliminations are part of my career. You can't undo that. But you can make sure things go differently in the future. That's where I'm directing my energy and focus. We'll do everything we can to bring joy back to the fans," he told broadcasters RTL/Sky in an interview.

Germany went out in the group stage in 2018 and 2022, while at this year's tournament, they were eliminated after a defeat on penalties to Paraguay in the round of 32 - the worst one for Kimmich

"For me, it was the hardest elimination. It has happened for the third time, this time in a different role. That's why it hit me even harder. I needed time to process it and come to terms with it," he said.

Germany will bid for a new start under coach Jürgen Klopp, who replaced Julian Nagelsmann after the World Cup.

"I definitely get the feeling that he's extremely excited about the task and that it means a great deal to him to do this for Germany. He brings a lot of energy, enthusiasm, and a great deal of anticipation," Kimmich said of Klopp, who will make his debut on Thursday, in the Nations League match against the Netherlands.

"It will be important for us to rediscover our own DNA and our identity. This identity is evident on the field, off the field, both externally and internally. It's reflected in how we treat one another, how we play for each other on the field, and how we communicate both internally and externally," Kimmich said.

He sees himself as the captain and, having played 114 international matches so far, feels a special sense of responsibility. 

"People always expect us to perform, but I expect that of myself, too. It's also about helping the team get back to where it belongs and where its potential and talent take it," he explained.
