Baur, Janelt, Keidel and Co - the new faces in Klopp's squad

New Germany coach Jürgen Klopp has been widely praised in German media for breaking the norms with his first squad announcement.

Not only did Thursday's list include a huge 44 names spread over two squads for upcoming Nations League games, it also had 11 players who have never been called up before. Here is a rundown of those 11, some of whom are largely unknown to many Germans.  

Mika Baur

The son of former handball world champion Markus Baur has been playing for Scottish club Celtic since August. The 22-year-old midfielder previously played for Paderborn and helped them be promoted to the Bundesliga.

Baur has become a regular starter in Glasgow and scored his first goal in the Scottish top flight just over a week ago. He has made one appearance for Germany's Under-21s so far. He has bonded with former Liverpool boss Klopp over the bad weather in Britain.

The Freiburg block

Up to four players from Freiburg could make their Germany debuts. They are defenders Philipp Treu, 25, and Max Rosenfelder, 23, midfielder Yannick Engelhardt and forward Derry Scherhant, 23.

New signing Engelhardt, previously at Como and Borussia Mönchengladbach, has stood out early in the season. He has started all three of Freiburg's Bundesliga matches. The 25-year-old has already scored two goals.

Hennes Behrens

The Augsburg player can look forward to a home match. After Klopp's first game as Germany coach in the Netherlands, Germany play Greece in Augsburg on September 27. The 21-year-old left wing-back immediately secured a starting place at Augsburg this term and has played every minute so far.

Bambasé Conté

When Klopp called the Hoffenheim attacking midfielder to speak to him about his first call-up, Conté laughed for two minutes straight, the coach said. The 23-year-old had not expected to be selected having previously spent time on loan outside the Bundesliga.

Felix Keidel

The 23-year-old is the first player in Elversberg's history to make it into a Germany squad. Keidel won promotion to the Bundesliga with the modest club. Before that, he played for Ingolstadt in the third division. He is versatile and has played for Elversberg at both full-back positions and in midfield.

Younes Ebnoutalib

Like Keidel and Conté, Ebnoutalib also developed strongly at Elversberg. In January, the Frankfurt-born player moved from Elversberg back to his home city to join Eintracht. After early injury problems, he is now hitting form for the Eagles - Ebnoutalib has scored three goals in three league matches this season. His call-up became public in advance through a fan's TikTok video. Klopp said it was no problem. "I saw a young player who is proud," the coach added.

Vitaly Janelt

Janelt has never played in the Bundesliga. The 28-year-old central midfielder has instead made 165 appearances in the English Premier League for Brentford, 134 of them from the start.

Finn Jeltsch

The 20-year-old has been playing for VfB Stuttgart for a year and a half and has developed under coach Sebastian Hoeness into a classy centre back. Klopp has now rewarded the former Nuremberg player. Klopp said Jeltsch was a top defender with unbelievable tackling skills.
