Greenpeace projects anti-oil protest onto Hamburg storage tank

Greenpeace activists projected images of raining money onto an oil storage tank at the port of Hamburg in protest against what the environmental group described as soaring excess profits at oil companies.

Police in the northern German city confirmed the protest took place in the early hours of Friday.

The words "Stop the oil rip-off!" were projected onto the large cylindrical tank alongside images of euro coins.

Greenpeace accused oil companies of reaping increasingly large profits while people in Germany struggle with high fuel bills. The activists cited figures showing that excess profits at oil majors have risen sharply since the outbreak of the Iran war and reached a new record in August.

Greenpeace accused the German government of doing too little to address the root causes of climate change and also called for the return of the €9 ($10) monthly public transport ticket.

The ticket for all local and regional public transit nationwide was introduced for three months in 2022 as part of government measures to cushion soaring energy and living costs.
