One person living near Germany's Frankfurt Airport dies from malaria

A person who lived near Germany's Frankfurt Airport has died from malaria, local authorities said on Thursday, following a recent cluster of cases linked to the transport hub.

The person was based in the Schwanheim district, which borders the airport, the city administration said, after reporting two new cases of malaria in the neighbourhood on Tuesday.

Malaria is a life-threatening disease transmitted by mosquitoes that is uncommon in Germany.

Two workers at Frankfurt Airport died from malaria in July and August after being infected by mosquitoes believed to have arrived in Germany on aircraft from malaria-endemic regions.

Health authorities said at the time that a total of six workers had been infected with malaria tropica - the most dangerous form of the disease - in July.

They said "very rare" airport malaria occurs when an infectious mosquito is imported on an aircraft or in luggage, with infection then taking place on the plane, at the airport or in its immediate vicinity.
