Munich faces tough competition in the race to host the athletics world championships in 2029 or 2031, as World Athletics boss Sebastian Coe said the ruling body has "outstanding bids" on the table.

"We have some outstanding, truly compelling bids on the table. We have a committee that has reviewed all the bids and will now make a recommendation," Coe told the media on Sunday on the sidelines of the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest

The next world championships will take place in Beijing in 2027, and the hosts for the 2029 and 2031 events will be announced on Tuesday. Munich, London, Rome and Nairobi are among the candidates.

Coe didn't want to name his favourite when asked by dpa. Germany previously hosted the athletics competition in 1993 (Stuttgart) and 2009 (Berlin).
