Bayern extend start record, Man Utd win in Champions League return

Jamal Musiala scored in his first start of the season as Bayern Munich routed Bodø/Glimt 5-0 on Thursday to extend their extraordinary start and home record in the Champions League.

German international Musiala had missed previous games after collapsing due to absence seizures in two pre-season friendlies, with his medication now adjusted.

Musiala opened the scoring in the 47th minute and Harry Kane headed home in the 61st for his 55th Champions League goal. Alphonso Davies and a late brace from Michael Olise completed a big win. Bodø had Odin Bjørtuft sent off late. 

Six-time champions Bayern recorded their 23rd straight win in a Champions League opener since last losing the first match in 2003 against Deportivo A Coruna. Their only other first-match defeat from 30 games in the Champions League era was 1994 against Paris Saint-Germain.

Bayern are unbeaten in 39 Champions League home games, of which they have won 37, since a December 2013 defeat against Manchester City.

Manchester United returned to the elite event for the first time since 2023 with a 4-0 victory over newcomers Sabah of Azerbaijan from Mateus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Šeško and Lisandro Martínez to complete a perfect start for the five Premier League clubs.

Italy's Como claimed an impressive 4-1 over RB Leipzig in their first ever Champions League match, with Martin Baturina, Tasos Douvikas, Assane Diao and Maximo Perrone.

Slavia Prague seemed on course to victory over Lens despite having Mikuláš Konečný sent off two minutes after coming on for the second half when Danijel Sturm completed a brace for 2-1 in the 87th. But stoppage time goals from Florian Thauvin and Ruben Aguilar gave Lens an improbable 3-2 win.

The early matches Fenerbahçe v Serie A leaders Roma and PSV Eindhoven v Shakhtar Donetsk ended 1-1.  

Roma lead from Bryan Cristante in the 39th but Archie Brown chipped a 48th minute equalizer. The other game followed the same pattern, with Sergiño Dest's 48th minute equalizer cancelling out Shakhtar's lead from Gleiker Mendoza on the stroke of half-time.

Bayern deliver after the break

Bayern were coming off a 0-0 Bundesliga draw at Schalke, a rare game in which they failed to find the net. Last season's surprise side Bodø also managed to keep them scoreless in the first half as their goalkeeper Nikita Haikin made several saves and Joshua Kimmich was denied by the post.

But Haikin didn't return for the second half and his replacement, Julian Faye Lund, was beaten for the first time two minutes after the restart into the far corner by Musiala.

Kane headed in Olise's free-kick in the 61st, Davies drilled into the top corner in the 77th and Olise then also had classy goals in the 83rd and in stoppage time in an early Bayern statement of intent.

"Really happy with result," Kane told streaming portal DAZN. "We had to be patient. Even in the first half we were the better team. The first goal opened it up and that helped. We have shown in the past seasons that we get stronger in the 60th, 70th minute."

United hit four

United had not tasted Champions League football since a 1-0 defeat in Munich in December 2023 and Cunha got them going at Old Trafford after 27 minutes when he tapped in Patrick Dorgu's low cross.

Sabah should have levelled from Joy-Lance Mickels' header, but instead United effectively clinched matters before half-time. Fernades emphatically converted a pass from Youri Tielemans in the 42nd and Šeško grabbed the third.

United could then save energy for a weekend league derby against Manchester City but they still got a fourth from Martínez.

"We're up and running in the Champions League," Dorgu said. "The last couple of games we have conceded a lot of goals, so it's good to get some confidence going into the derby on the weekend."

Impressive Como

Como were promoted to Serie A in 2024 and came fourth last season to qualify for their first Champions League adventure under coach Cesc Fabregas.

It couldn't have gone better as Baturina opened the scoring in the 15th off a cut-back from Douvikas.

Como keeper Jean Butez saved from Antonio Nusa and Andrija Maksimović before Douvikas made it 2-0 off a through-ball from Baturina. Diao heaped more misery on Leipzig with Como's third in the 54th, and Maksimović's drive four minutes later didn't help the Germans either as Perrone wrapped up matters in stoppage time.

"I'm very proud. It's an amazing feeling to score my first Champions League goal, but it's thanks to the whole team," Baturina said. 

"We showed great intensity on the pitch. We prepared for the match like any other game. We didn't want the Champions League atmosphere to affect us too much, so we focused on our usual preparation."
