Augsburg top Bundesliga for first time with big win; Mainz hit five

Augsburg scored twice in the opening two minutes of the second half as they climbed to the top of the Bundesliga standings for the first time in club history with a sensational 4-1 comeback victory at Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday.

Jonathan Burkardt headed Frankfurt ahead in the sixth minute but they wasted several more chances and Arijon Ibrahimović headed the equalizer 30 seconds after the restart.

Sixty seconds later Frankfurt goalkeeper Noah Atubolu failed to hold on to a shot from Ibrahimović and Robin Fellhauer slid in at the far post for 2-1.

Atubolu partly redeemed himself when he superbly saved another effort from Ibrahimović heading for the top corner.

But it was 3-1 in the 65th from substitute Alexis Claude-Maurice's curling effort into the far right corner. Fabian Rieder curled home free-kick to wrap up the big win in the 89th.

"It was a very bad first half but we showed our quality in the second," Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen told streaming portal DAZN.

Frankfurt's Burkardt said: "The two quick goals really hurt us. Augsburg were much more mature in the second half."

Having beaten Schalke 3-0 in their opener last weekend, Augsburg went top with a maximum six points. They are top of the table for the first time after a full matchday since joining the Bundesliga in 2011. Their best finish was fifth in 2015.

"It is something special even if it's just matchday two. It shows that we have worked well in the pre-season," Dahmen said. 

Augsburg rank ahead of Freiburg, Borussia Dortmund and promoted Elversberg on goal difference. 

Mainz follow in fifth place after an impressive 5-0 at SV hapless SV Hamburg, who only had one shot on target, earlier Sunday.

Mainz dominated from the kick-off and took a 19th-minute lead from Sheraldo Becker's solo after Kaishu Sano intercepted a terrible pass from Hamburg's Nicolai Remberg.

Mainz doubled the lead in the 41st on another well executed attack, with Becker finding Phillipp Mwene at the far-left post for an easy tap-in.

Fan favourite Fabio Vieira, back in Hamburg permanently from Arsenal after a loan spell last season, came on for the second half.

But instead of inspiring a comeback, Mainz made it 3-0 just four minutes after the restart when Becker delivered another dangerous cross from the right which Phillip Tietz converted.

Tietz struck again in the 83rd and the humiliation was complete when Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer, who left Hamburg for Mainz in summer, wrapped up matters in his former home stadium and celebrated wildly which did not go down well among Hamburg fans and players.

Hamburg are bottom of the table with zero points and goals and next face a difficult trip to RB Leipzig.

"It is not what we wanted. We must digest this and want to return strongly," Hamburg goalkeeper Daniel Heuer-Fernandes said.  

Becker said: "We had a bit of an extra feeling because we lost 4-0 here [last season] and wanted to give them a payback. The three points are important. But we have a derby next week and must perform well there again."

He was referring to a meeting with regional rivals Frankfurt who are in the lowlands with one point and seven goals shipped in two games.
