Bayern's Neuer: Boos in Schalke homecoming 'are compliments'

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer wasn't bothered by the boos and whistles in his homecoming to Gelsenkirchen for his likely last match at Schalke.

"Those are actually compliments, that's love. Every boo every time I touched the ball was a compliment," Neuer said after the goalless draw on Saturday evening.

Neuer has played for only two clubs in his career and even 15 years after his transfer to Bayern, he still has a special connection with his hometown club.

"I played here for over 20 years, so it was still a very emotional day for me-something truly special. Still, I would have liked to take the three points home with me," he said.

Schalke are making their long-awaited return to the Bundesliga after three years in the second division. Neuer, meanwhile, is likely playing the last season in his professional career.

The promoted side took an unexpected point against the German record champions and while Neuer had little to do in the evening, Schalke counterpart Loris Karius took centre stage with big saves.

"He's the right choice for Player of the Match. He stopped the three big chances we had. That was the key today," the Bayern number one said.

Schalke coach Miron Muslic recognized that "in the end, it was certainly a lucky point, but we gave it our all for Schalke, and that's what makes us strong."
