Musiala's condition 'not a big alarm' for Bayern coach any more

Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany said that Jamal Musiala's health situation is "not a big alarm" for the club any more, but he's yet to decide whether the midfielder will play in the Bundesliga match against Schalke on Saturday.

"I won't always give updates on it in the future. We always have the very best experts helping us. Jamal also communicates very well about it," Kompany said in a news conference on Friday.

"We'll make the right decision in a sporting sense. He needs to be able to play and perform properly. He's got no problems there. If it were to then happen again, it's not a big alarm for us any more."

Musiala collapsed due to absence seizures in two pre-season friendlies. The club later explained that he made adjustments to his medication and that's why the episodes became visible. 

The club has been aware of the situation for a while, but Musiala only publicly disclosed the diagnosis after the incidents during the pre-season matches.

He's yet to play this season for Bayern and has so far missed the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup, the Bundesliga opener against VfB Stuttgart and the German Cup first round against VfL Osnabrück.

"He's had a good and full week of training. He's doing well. We've already stated how we'll handle him. We'll see in training today and will then make a decision that's the best for Jamal and the team," Kompany said.

He added that Serge Gnabry is still not available due to injury, but the coach expects the winger to be back next week.

Promoted Schalke are back in the Bundesliga for the first time since the 2022-23 season. In their league opener, they lost 3-0 to Augsburg while Bayern thrashed Stuttgart 5-1.

But Kompany thinks Schalke are "a very stable club."

"I think the step up from the second division to the first in Germany is more doable than in England, where the differences are much greater, especially financially," he said.

"When you look at Schalke, they're not like a promoted club. They look very stable. It was tough for them in Augsburg, but they had a good pre-season. I don't think they'll have many problems this season. We're playing against a Bundesliga club, which is always difficult."
