Two injured in explosion near central station in Germany's Augsburg

Two people were slightly injured in an explosion early Wednesday near the main railway station in the southern German city of Augsburg, police said, while a second suspicious object found in the area was later confirmed to be harmless.

An unidentified object exploded in a building passageway opposite the station at around 3:15 am (0115 GMT). A 17-year-old woman and 18-year-old man suffered mild hearing injuries, while windows were also damaged in the blast.

Both of the victims are Ukrainian nationals, who happened to be in the area at the time of the blast, according to police.

The circumstances surrounding the explosion were unclear. Explosives experts from the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office were at the scene, a police spokesman said.

The large building complex opposite Augsburg main station houses several shops and doctor's offices.

Police found another suspicious object nearby some five hours after the blast, resulting in a complete halt to train services for about 90 minutes and the station being cordoned off.

However, the object was later found to be harmless and the station has since been reopened, according to police.
