Musiala to miss Super Cup match after recent health issues

Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala will miss the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday due to side effects after a change in his treatment for absence seizures.

"He's trained individually this week. He changed something in his treatment, which had some side effects. It's completely normal to change something in a treatment. Now we want to get it back to how it was before," coach Vincent Kompany said in a news conference on Friday.

After collapsing twice during two recent pre-season friendly matches, Musiala revealed that he was suffering from "brief, temporary - but treatable - absence seizures resulting from a neurological dysfunction" and that he was "optimistic."

"He changed something in the medication, which is why the episodes became visible. Now we want to get back to where it was before, when these episodes didn't occur," board member for sport Max Eberl explained.

Kompany said that the club has been "dealing with it for longer" and that since the initial shock, "we've been given a lot more information and have made decisions with the help of the best experts."

"Internally, we're at a point where we're not speaking about it much any more. We've been prepared for it for a long time, have our processes and are very optimistic," he said.

Bayern have stressed that neurologists treating Musiala stated there were no concerns about elite sport. Bayern sources also told dpa there is no evidence that the playmaker cannot continue his career at the highest level.

Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl will also miss the match due to injury.
