Police in the western German state of Hesse are investigating a large swastika burnt into an asphalt surface at a sports facility in the state.

The swastika measuring approximately four by four metres is believed to have been created sometime between Sunday evening and Monday afternoon.

Police believe those responsible lit a fire in the shape of a swastika, leaving the black image on the asphalt. Damage is estimated at €5,000 ($5,800).

A criminal investigation unit in the city of Kassel is investigating the incident as a case of using symbols of banned unconstitutional and terrorist organizations.
