Germany great Lothar Matthäus advised former national team coach Julian Nagelsmann to look for a new job abroad following a disappointing participation at the recent World Cup.

"I don't think Nagelsmann will land a top job in Germany anytime soon. He's under greater scrutiny here than he would be abroad," he wrote in his column for broadcaster Sky on Monday.

Matthäus emphasized: "No one wants to hurt him personally. But in the recent past, he's reacted too sensitively to criticism and has sometimes been very offended.

"In professional football, criticism arises when the results aren't there or when the team isn't playing attractive football. With Julian, both were the case."

Nagelsmann agreed to step down from his coaching job at the Germany national team after they were eliminated by Paraguay in the round of 32 of the World Cup. Former Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund boss Jürgen Klopp was signed as a replacement.
