Clear skies expected as Germany gears up for 90% solar eclipse

A partial solar eclipse will be visible from most of Germany on Wednesday evening, with up to 90% of the sunset to be obscured by the moon. 

Meteorologist Nils Damke from the German Weather Service said on Monday that a high-pressure system should ensure clear skies for the unusual phenomenon across most of the country. 

Higher cloud fields could move in on Wednesday in the north-west of the country, but they are unlikely to interfere with the eclipse, Damke said. "Weather-wise, it's actually perfect," he added.

However, because of the low altitude of the sun, observers in Germany will need an unobstructed view towards the western horizon. A hill, open field or other elevated location may offer better conditions than a city street surrounded by buildings and trees.

Europe is gearing up for a rare eclipse on Wednesday, with stargazers flocking to parts of Spain and Iceland where the coverage is set to reach 100%. 

Depending on the location, around 85% to 90% of the sun will be obscured in Germany, with the spectacle beginning around 7:15 pm (1715 GMT) and ending at sunset. 

Just a few hours later, the next highlight follows: The annual Perseid meteor shower is due reach its peak from around 11 pm. 

Here too, Damke sees "very, very good prospects as far as the weather is concerned."
