Florian Wellbrock crowned his European Aquatics Championships participation with a third open water gold medal as his Germany team won the 1,500-metre mixed team relay in Paris on Saturday.

Isabel Gose took over from Julia Ackermann to put Germany in second and Oliver Klemet took the lead before handing over to Wellbrock, who brought it home.

Germany finished the race in 1 hour 03 minutes 39.2 seconds, beating Italy by 2.0 seconds. Bronze went to Hungary.

Germany now hold the world and European titles in the event. Wellbrock had previously won open water gold in the men's five- and 10-kilometre.

"We're the reigning world champions in this event, and now we're European champions too. I don't think we could have done any better today," Wellbrock said.

"Three medals, three titles at the European championships, I wouldn't have dreamed of this. I'm insanely thankful that I could experience that."
