'Our aim is to win the Champions League': Bayern coach Kompany

Bayern Munich want a title treble next season for the third time in club history after coming close in the past campaign, coach Vincent Kompany said on Thursday.

Bayern won the Bundesliga and the German Cup last term while narrowly going out in the Champions League semi-finals against eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.

Kompany said on the eve of a pre-season match against England's Aston Villa in Hong Kong that they will be aiming for the treble they achieved in 2013 and 2020.

"Right now, I’d say our aim is to win the Champions League; there’s no doubt about that," Kompany said.

"And throughout the season, I’ll be saying that we need to focus on the next match. To achieve that – to win the Bundesliga, the cup and the Champions League – we need the whole squad to be fit and healthy.

"We need to make good use of them and improve the squad. We’ve already done that, but hopefully it will help us achieve our goals.

"It’s difficult to improve – after all, it’s not just about the trophies we’ve won, but also about the number of goals and matches we’ve won. It’s possible, but difficult."

Bayern set a Bundesliga goals record in past season with 122, which was 21 more than the previous mark of 101 also held by the club.

Looking at Friday's match against the Europa League champions Villa, Kompany said that goalkeeper Manuel Neuer will be starting after sitting out Tuesday's match in South Korea against Jeju where back-up Jonas Urbig was between the posts.

Neuer, 40, has said the season will likely be his last and that like in the past campaign, where Urbig featured in 20 matches, they will alternate.

Kompany said: "Manuel is our number one. But we love Jonas Urbig. We want to continue helping him improve and develop.

"He’s played in a cup final against Stuttgart and featured in important Champions League matches. The aim – and this comes as no surprise – is that we want to continue giving him playing time. When and how, we’ll have to see – but at the right moments.”
