Bosnia and Herzegovina striker Edin Dzeko has signed a new one-year contract with Schalke, the Bundesliga club said in a statement on Monday.

The player will join the squad for training on Tuesday after representing his nation at the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

Dzeko joined Schalke from Fiorentina in January and played a key role in the club's promotion to the Bundesliga, scoring six goals and providing six assists in 11 matches.

"Edin brought something special to Schalke 04 during his first four and a half months at the club. He was a key player and a fan favourite, while his personality meant he always set an example both on and off the pitch. We therefore believe that he can help us in the Bundesliga too," director of professional football Youri Mulder said.

Dzeko will continue to wear the number 10 jersey.

"Since arriving at Schalke in the winter, I have been part of a fantastic team and experienced the incredible support of the fans. Winning promotion to the Bundesliga ranks among the highlights of my career. It was unbelievable," he said.

"Football has made me happy and driven me throughout my life. I am still hungry, and I want to help our team in the Bundesliga too."

Lindström's transfer falls through

The transfer of Napoli forward Jesper Lindström, meanwhile, has fallen through.

According to information obtained by dpa, the player was already in Gelsenkirchen but was told by the club that an agreement wasn't reached with Napoli.

Lindström was hoping to join Schalke on loan after he spent the previous season at VfL Wolfsburg.

The player was part of Eintracht Frankfurt's Europa League winning squad in 2022. He moved to Napoli in 2023 but has been loaned to Everton and Wolfsburg since then.
