Bundesliga looking into offer from US investor

The Bundesliga confirmed on Sunday it is looking into a major offer from a United States financial investor.

“It is correct that the Bundesliga received an unsolicited proposal for a debt financing model at the league association level,” the Bundesliga told dpa.

The league did not disclose the value of the offer.

The Bild paper reported that financial company Apollo was offering the Bundesliga a loan of at least €1 billion ($1.14 billion), with the domestic media rights to serve as collateral.

The league confirmed that a meeting between representatives of the Bundesliga, club representatives and Apollo took place last month in New York during the World Cup which the US co-hosted.

The Bundesliga said the offer was being reviewed in principle.

To support the Bundesliga Group’s investment plans, a strategic reserve from media revenues was recently established and a partnership with Adidas concluded.

In addition, the Bundesliga said that it and its committees “regularly examine possible models.

"Following the submission of the offer in question, the Bundesliga, in coordination with the league’s governing bodies, has begun a general, preliminary review of the proposal and its legal feasibility,” the Bundesliga said.
