Berlin police release image of suspect in Pride attack amid manhunt

Berlin police have released a photograph of the suspected perpetrator of the attack on the Christopher Street Day (CSD) Pride parade in Berlin that left one person dead and 16 injured. 

Authorities have launched a manhunt in the German capital for the 21-year-old suspect, named only as Abdul B. under German privacy laws, who fled the scene after a car hit a crowd near the Tiergarten park on Saturday night.

Police spokesman Florian Nath said the suspect was known to authorities and believed to be part of Berlin's Islamist scene. According to dpa information, he was only released from youth detention in May 2026.

A wanted notice from the Berlin Public Prosecutor's Office and the State Criminal Police Office released early on Sunday warned the public to dial 110 immediately if they come across the suspect, who is described as slim and approximately 1.90 metres tall.

"Do not approach him, he may be armed and dangerous!," the statement continued.

According to police, a white van struck several people near the Pride event in the Tiergarten park around 10 pm (2000 GMT) on Saturday, prompting organizers to call off the celebrations. 

The vehicle then crashed into a tree and the driver fled, police said. The motive remains unclear.

It is also unclear whether the suspect was driving the vehicle. The empty vehicle, which Nath said was severely damaged, was seized near the scene of the crime.

Nath said investigators were also examining whether there had been a second phase of the incident after the car struck people, including whether someone had left the vehicle and attacked people with a possible bladed weapon.

According to witness accounts, several people may have suffered stab wounds, while some said they had seen a man dressed in black carrying a machete.
