Klopp set to be unveiled as Germany coach on Friday

Jürgen Klopp looks set to be presented as Germany coach on Friday after the German Football Federation (DFB) sent out an invite to a press conference at its Frankfurt headquarters.

Confirmation of his appointment did not come on Thursday, with the invite to the 11 am (0900 GMT) gathering not mentioning the 59-year-old's name, but a Friday unveiling has widely been expected.

The DFB previously denied reports it was holding a major meeting on Thursday to rubber-stamp Klopp as the Germany men's coach. Instead the online meeting is poised to happen just before Friday's press conference. Klopp is set to sign until 2030.

All the talk from the former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool coach, the DFB and his current employer Red Bull - where he is global head of soccer - has pointed to a deal being done.

According to the Bild newspaper, the drink company's foundation will receive a donation of $1.14 million as compensation. The DFB has not commented on the report.

Germany need a coach after Julian Nagelsmann was forced to resign following the last-32 exit to Paraguay on June 29 at the recent World Cup - a third early flop in a row.

Klopp has nine weeks to prepare for Germany's next match. His debut as a national team coach will come in the Nations League on September 24 in Amsterdam against the Netherlands.

He won two Bundesliga titles with Dortmund in 2011 and 2012 before lifting the Champions League with Liverpool in 2019 and the Premier League a year afterwards.

His job at Red Bull meant he had oversight over its football teams across the world, including RB Leipzig and New York Red Bulls.

Sammer offers to help DFB

Klopp was also a pundit for Germany's MagentaTV during the World Cup and is up to speed on international football, although his engagement in the US until Sunday's final slightly slowed talks with the DFB.

Its president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans Joachim Watzke, who was Dortmund chief executive during Klopp's glory years there, flew out to New York to meet him earlier this month and later held talks with Red Bull.

Despite Klopp's rivalry with Bayern from his time as Dortmund coach, Bayern president Herbert Hainer says he is "absolutely the right man" to get Germany back on track and there have been few dissenting voices across German football given his charisma and winning record.

Former Germany international Sven Bender is set to be named one of Klopp's assistants alongside long-time confidants Peter Krawietz and Pepijn Lijnders, the Bild newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Germany's 2014 World Cup winner Per Mertesacker, who formerly ran Arsenal's youth academy, is in talks with the DFB about a role. Managing director Andreas Rettig is stepping down in December.

Matthias Sammer, the Euro 1996 winner and Borussia Dortmund adviser, has also offered to be involved in some capacity having previously worked for the federation from 2006 to 2012 as technical director.

"I have signalled to the two most important representatives of the DFB that I am ready to help our football," he told the newspaper Die Zeit.

Sammer has not always seen eye-to-eye with Klopp but added: "Klopp is exactly the right person for this position. He stands for something physical and high tempo. He has a clear playing idea with and without the ball. He has aura and authority.

"But he also knows that as national team coach he will no longer be involved in daily training work and will depend on what happens in the pyramid, in the youth development work below him."
