Two dead in motorway head-on collision in Germany

Two people have died, and several others were critically injured, in a German motorway crash caused by a car driving in the wrong direction, the police reported on Sunday.

The accident happened on the A45 motorway north-east of Frankfurt. 

The three children of the contraflow driver, a 34-year-old Bavarian woman, are in a critical condition, police said.

The woman had driven onto the motorway in the wrong direction at the Florstadt intersection and collided head-on at high speed with a car driven by a 70-year-old man.

He died at the scene. 

The contraflow driver succumbed to her injuries shortly afterwards in hospital. Her husband and their three children, aged between 10 and 15, were seriously injured.

The crash trapped all occupants in their vehicles, and they had to be freed, police said. Some were airlifted to hospital by helicopter. The public prosecutor's office has commissioned an expert to determine the exact cause of the accident.
