The number of e-scooter accidents involving injuries or deaths in Germany rose sharply in 2025, with fatalities also increasing, official figures showed on Thursday.
Police recorded around 16,500 such accidents last year, up about 38% from 2024, according to the Federal Statistical Office.
A total of 38 people died in e-scooter crashes in 2025, compared with 27 a year earlier.
The accidents also left around 1,900 people seriously injured and about 16,200 with minor injuries.
The statistics office said 82.4% of those injured or killed were riding an e-scooter themselves, including 33 of the 38 people who died.
Another 5.5% of casualties were passengers riding on e-scooters, including one of the fatal victims.
Under Germany's road traffic regulations, e-scooters are designed for a single rider, and carrying passengers is prohibited, the office noted.
Of the remaining five people killed in e-scooter accidents, three were pedestrians, one was a cyclist and one was travelling in a car.
