The German Football Federation (DFB) said on Saturday it has agreed on key points of a possible contract with Jürgen Klopp to become Germany coach and both sides are confident of a deal with his current employer Red Bull.
Talks were held in New York on Friday between the former Liverpool coach and DFB president Bernd Neuendorf. DFB vice president Hans-Joachim Watzke, who knows Klopp well from their time together at Borussia Dortmund, also attended the meeting.
Klopp is in the US working as a TV pundit during the World Cup but had already signalled his interest in replacing Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following the last-32 exit to Paraguay.
A DFB statement said of the meeting: "During this constructive discussion, an agreement was reached on the key points of a potential contract.
"The talks will continue next week. Both sides are confident that the negotiations – subject to an agreement being reached with Klopp’s current employer, Red Bull – can ultimately be concluded successfully."
