Nearly five years late, Merkel finally gets her Chancellery portrait

A portrait of former German chancellor Angela Merkel, painted by the largely unknown artist Jérémie Queyras, is being unveiled at the Bode Museum on Berlin's Museum Island, nearly five years after she left office.

The painting is due to go on public display at the Bode Museum for three months before moving to the Chancellery later in the year.

Merkel herself was notably understated about the moment in a recent interview with the newspaper Die Zeit. "So there I'll hang," she said. "It's strange when you slowly become history."

The first floor of the Chancellery displays portraits of all chancellors up to Gerhard Schröder, who was painted by Jörg Immendorff in 2007. 

Alongside Merkel's portrait, a painting of Olaf Scholz is also still missing. His office said he has not yet chosen an artist.
