German prosecutors: Suspected Hamas network planned attack in Europe

German investigators believe the suspected procurement of weapons for the Palestinian militant organization Hamas was linked to concrete plans for an attack in Europe, Germany's top federal prosecutor said on Monday.
"A pre-produced video claiming responsibility was seized from one of the suspects," Federal Attorney General Jens Rommel told reporters at his office's annual news conference in the western German city of Karlsruhe.
German prosecutors have arrested nine suspected Hamas supporters since late last year. They are accused of having been involved in the transport and storage of weapons and ammunition for the militant group since at least mid-2025.
Rommel said the video announced an attack around the second anniversary of Hamas' October 7, 2023 assault on Israel, pointing to a planned operation around October 7, 2025.
Federal prosecutors arrested the first three suspects in the case on October 1, 2025, just days before the anniversary.
Germany's Federal Prosecutor's Office is responsible for terrorism, espionage and war crimes cases. Rommel has headed the authority since March 2024.
