German start-up brings forward heavy-lift drone production by 3 years

German aerospace company ERC System plans to begin serial production of a new dual-use transport drone in 2028, three years earlier than originally planned, as demand for unmanned aircraft grows in the defence sector.

The company, which is based near Munich, is presenting the heavy-lift drone, named Victor, at the Berlin Air Show. The hybrid-powered aircraft is designed for both military and civilian applications and can carry payloads of up to 250 kilograms over distances of up to 300 kilometres, sales chief Maximilian Oligschläger said.

ERC System expects the first Victor prototype to make its maiden flight later this year.

The company said development of the drone would be faster and less costly than initially anticipated, allowing it to bring a product to market sooner amid strong demand for military and civilian drone technology.

According to Oligschläger, the project was initiated following interest from military customers seeking unmanned aircraft capabilities. The company said Victor is also intended for civilian uses including offshore logistics and firefighting.

The drone will use a hybrid propulsion system combining a diesel engine and an electric motor.

ERC System is backed by aerospace services company IABG and does not rely on continuous fundraising. Its partner on the drone project is Northern Helicopter, a wholly owned subsidiary of German air rescue operator DRF Luftrettung.

The company said customer interest was strong, with more than 100 meetings scheduled during the Berlin Air Show.
