VfB Stuttgart have signed midfielder Grischa Prömel from Bundesliga rivals Hoffenheim.

VfB Stuttgart have signed midfielder Grischa Prömel from Bundesliga rivals Hoffenheim.

Stuttgart said on Monday that the 31-year-old will sign a contract until 2029. Prömel arrives on a free transfer as his Hoffenheim contract expires on June 30.

Prömel was born in Stuttgart, started his Bundesliga career at Union Berlin where he played 2017-2022, and then went to Hoffenheim. He missed most of the past season with a severe knee injury but performed well in his comeback lately.

Stuttgart finished fourth ahead of Hoffenheim to qualify for the next Champions League.

"Grischa is an outstanding footballer, is incredibly ambitious and has gained a lot of valuable experience in recent years," Stuttgart board member for sport Fabian Wohlgemuth said.

"That combination makes him a priceless addition, particularly as he hails from the region and therefore has a strong affinity with VfB.”

Prömel said: “The desire to one day join VfB is one I’ve had for quite some time. VfB have built incredible momentum in recent years and are known for their attractive style of play. Seeing where the club is now is impressive, and it feels great to become a part of that journey.”

Stuttgart later on Monday also announced the signing of goalkeeper Marius Funk from third division Energie Cottbus.

Funk, 30, played in Stuttgart academy teams between 2011 and 2016 and is to bolster their ranks between the posts which appear unclear for the new season.

The loan of first choice Alexander Nübel from Bayern Munich expires and Stuttgart are reportedly reluctant to spend big money on a full transfer and big wage for the German international.

Stuttgart also have talented youngster Dennis Seimen, a German under-21 international who has played a strong season at second division Paderborn and is seen as a future number one at the club.
