The driver suspected of carrying out a deadly car ramming in the eastern German city of Leipzig is due to appear before a judge after two people were killed and three were seriously injured.
The suspect, a 33-year-old German national, surrendered to police without resistance while still inside the vehicle after the attack in central Leipzig on Monday evening, which authorities described as a deliberate rampage.
The victims were a 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man. Both were German citizens, police said.
Many others were hurt, Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung said, although the exact number of people injured remained unclear.
"That was very difficult yesterday. Many people left the scene independently and went to see a doctor," Ricardo Schulz, a spokesman for the Leipzig public prosecutor's office, told dpa.
The area remained cordoned off by police, while passers-by laid candles and flowers in tribute to those killed and injured.
On Monday evening police said that, based on the latest findings, investigators do not believe the perpetrator had a political or religious motive.
