Fatalities involving e-bike users, older cyclists surge in Germany
27.04.2026, 09:07
The number of cyclists killed in road accidents across Germany rose by 3.8% to 462 in 2025, official data showed on Monday, with more than half of victims aged 65 and over.
Compared to 2015, cyclist fatalities have surged by 20.6%, the Federal Statistical Office said.
The rise is attributed to the increasing number of e-bike users. Some 217 of the fatalities involved e-bikes, up from just 36 in 2015.
The statistics showed older cyclists are particularly at risk in road accidents. In 2025, 61.5% of cyclists who were killed were aged 65 and over.
The share of older cyclists among total fatalities was 56.3% for pedal bicycles and 67.3% for e-bikes.
Overall, 16.4% of fatal road accidents across Germany involved a cyclist, the Wiesbaden-based agency said.
Of the 95,794 accidents resulting in an injury recorded last year, a second person - most commonly a car driver - was involved in two-thirds of cases.
