Working from home is more common in Germany than in most EU countries, official data showed on Wednesday.
A quarter of employed people worked from home at least some of the time last year, the Federal Statistical Office said.
This represents a slight increase compared to the previous two years. In 2024 the rate was 24% and in 2023 it was 23%.
By comparison, in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic hit, only 13% of employed people in Germany worked from home occasionally or more frequently than that.
Last year, the share of people working from home in Germany was slightly above the EU-wide average, which was 23% of all employed people aged 15 and over, according to the figures.
As in previous years, the highest rate was in the Netherlands, where 52% of employed people worked from home at least some of the time.
The rates were lowest in Romania and Bulgaria, where only 4% worked at home.
A key factor affecting the rate of home working in Germany is what sector the person was involved in. Home office setups were widespread among IT service providers, administration and management consultancy, each with a share of just under 75%.
Working from home was particularly popular among age groups that have to combine work and family, the statisticians said.
In Germany in 2025, the highest rate of working from home was among 35 to 44-year-olds (30%), while among 25 to 34-year-olds it was 28%.
