One driver died in a serious seven-car crash during the qualifying race for the Nürburgring 24 Hours on Saturday.

According to race officials, Juha Miettinen died at the medical centre. After the 66-year-old Finnish driver was extracted from his car, all attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful.

The FIA motorsport governing body reacted with dismay to the news of his death. "Our thoughts are with his family and friends and everyone involved in the event," it said in a statement posted to X.

The other six drivers were taken to the medical centre and nearby hospitals for precautionary examinations. According to race officials, none of them are in life-threatening condition.

The race gained extra attention due to Max Verstappen's participation. The four-time Formula One champion is on a break after races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were cancelled.

Verstappen was not on track at the time of the accident and his car, at that moment driven by team-mate Lucas Auer, was not involved in the crash.

He also shared a message of condolence on socia media, stating he was shocked by the incident.

"Motorsport is something we all love, but in times like this it is a reminder of how dangerous it can be. Sending my heartfelt condolences to Juha's family and loved ones," Verstappen wrote.

This year's Nürburgring 24 Hours will take place on May 14-17.
