The United States has approved a possible sale of military equipment to Germany with an estimated value of $11.9 billion, the US State Department said on Friday.

The United States has approved a possible sale of military equipment to Germany with an estimated value of $11.9 billion, the US State Department said on Friday.

The department said it had approved a corresponding request by the German government.

"This proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and national security objectives of the United States by improving the security of a NATO Ally," the statement said.

Germany was a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe, it added.

According to the statement, Germany is seeking to acquire eight integrated combat systems, modern radar systems and launch systems for guided missiles, among other things.

The technology would allow warships to detect threats early, fend them off and link up with other NATO units.

"The proposed sale will enhance German maritime forces capability to meet current and future threats by improving national and territorial defense as well as interoperability with U.S. and NATO forces," the State Department said.

The deal was submitted to the US Congress, which can still raise objections.

The main contractors would be the US defence companies Lockheed Martin and RTX Corporation.
