Neuer: Retirement decision will not be based on titles won this term

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer says a decision on whether to retire at the end of the season will come soon, but will not be based on any trophies the German giants win this season.

Bayern have all but wrapped up the Bundesliga title and lead Real Madrid 2-1 ahead of their Champions League quarter-final second leg at home on Wednesday. They also have a German Cup semi-final at Bayer Leverkusen next Wednesday.

"I’d like to make a decision sooner rather than later. But I’m not basing it on titles," he told a news conference.

"Ideally, I’d like us to win them all, but our opponents also have a big say in that. I haven’t made up my mind yet, but it won’t be long before I do. And then there will be talks with the club."

The 2014 Germany World Cup winner, who retired from international duty two years ago, signed a one-year deal with Bayern last season and could do so again if he decides to carry on.

He recently turned 40 and is increasingly injury-prone but shone in the first leg. Jonas Urbig is waiting in the wings long-term.
