Four-time Formula One champion Max Verstappen will race in the Nürburgring 24 Hours this year, organizers said in a statement on Monday.

The annual race, which is part of the Intercontinental GT Challenge, will take place on May 16-17, just a few days before the F1 Canadian Grand Prix.

The Dutchman will compete in a Mercedes-AMG GT3 for Mercedes-AMG Team Verstappen Racing and be will be supported by Red Bull.

"The 24h Nürburgring is a race that’s been on my bucket list for a long time, so I’m really thrilled we can make it happen now," he said.

"Now it’s about putting in the right preparations before the events, so we can maximise everything in the races."

In preparation for the 24-hour race, Verstappen is also scheduled to make an appearance in the Nürburgring Endurance Series on March 21, around a week after the F1 Chinese Grand Prix.

Last year, Verstappen received a licence to compete in top-level endurance racing.

In September, he made his GT3 race debut and won, driving a Ferrari 296 GT3 in the Nürburgring Endurance Series.
