Germany's Wadephul warns of fresh wave of migration due to Iran war

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has warned of a new wave of migration towards Europe in light of the regional consequences of the Iran war.
"The situation created by the war is dramatic in some respects," Wadephul said at a meeting with his Dutch counterpart Tom Berendsen in Berlin.
He added that this is why they must also ensure that many internally displaced people do not become a new wave of refugees.
The German government wants to mitigate the humanitarian crisis and is therefore providing an additional nearly €100 million ($116 million) for humanitarian aid, announced Wadephul.
"We are seeing a new dynamic and drama in Lebanon with many internally displaced people," the conservative politician said, adding that they want to provide on-site assistance throughout the region.
No delivery of German air-defence systems planned
According to Wadephul, the government is not considering delivering air-defence systems to the countries attacked by Iran.
"Our focus is Ukraine," he said. The majority of German air-defence systems, particularly Patriot systems, have been delivered to Ukraine in its defence against Russia.
"If we had anything left in this regard, we would also have to seriously consider giving it to Ukraine," said Wadephul. "Therefore, there are currently no thoughts within the federal government to deliver such systems elsewhere."
Berendsen said that wherever possible, the partner countries attacked by Iran must be supported.
"It is important that we present a united front, as we have considerable security and economic interests in the region."
The Dutch government is considering sending a frigate as part of the French aircraft carrier group Charles de Gaulle to the Mediterranean, he added.
