The German government is set to begin evacuating vulnerable German nationals stranded in the Middle East due to the war in Iran, with a flight planned to Oman's capital Muscat on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has confirmed.

Berlin is set to offer children, infirm citizens and pregnant women access to the flights, Wadephul told broadcaster Welt TV.

Foreign nationals have been left stranded en masse by flight cancellations in the Gulf region following the US-Israeli attack on Iran on Saturday.

Up to 30,000 customers of German travel agencies are believed to be affected by cancellations and the closure of airspace in several countries.

Airlines and tour operators are scrambling to organize the safe return of stranded tourists, with an Emirates flight from Dubai landing at Frankfurt on Tuesday.
