Alexander Zverev beat Corentin Moutet on Tuesday night to start his campaign at the Mexican Open, his first competitive action since his defeat in the Australian Open semi-final against Carlos Alcaraz.
The German dominated in a 6-2, 6-4 victory and didn't allow a break point.
In the last 16, he will face Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic.
"Corentin can be a tricky opponent, especially if you haven't played matches in a while, like myself," Zverev said of the Frenchman, who was seeking his 100th tour-level win. "So definitely happy with the performance, and looking forward to what's ahead."
Third seed Casper Ruud meanwhile suffered a major upset in a 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-1) defeat to qualifier Wu Yibing of China.
The hard court tournament in Acapulco is considered an important test of form ahead of the two upcoming Masters events in Indian Wells and Miami in March.
