Real Madrid missed out on direct qualification for the Champions League last 16 after Benfica goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin scored in stoppage time to send his side into the play-offs, with Sporting also netting a late goal to help deny the record winners.

Jose Mourinho's Benfica won 4-2 at home against his ex-side Real on Wednesday, but at 3-2 many fans and some players in Lisbon did not seem to realize they needed another goal to be the last unseeded play-off team.

But once the message had spread across the stadium, Ukrainian keeper Trubin went up field and headed in on 90+8 minutes to spark remarkable scenes at the end of the final league phase matches.

"This victory is historic and important – even more so from a prestige point of view," Mourinho said.

"You think it's enough, and it's not. You have to change things and take risks, because in the end this ball could have made it 3-3 and we would still have been eliminated."

In a twist of fate, Benfica could now face record winners Real in the play-offs. The Spaniards could also be drawn with Norwegians Bodø/Glimt, who won 2-1 at other Madrid club Atletico on Wednesday.

Real, who ended up with nine men, were already going to miss direct progression to the last 16 because of Sporting's injury-time winner from Alisson Santos sealing a 3-2 victory at Athletic Bilbao, who went out.

Holders Paris Saint-Germain - who drew 1-1 with Newcastle - must also enter the play-offs as a seeded team like Real, while Napoli lost 3-2 at home to Chelsea to bow out just like PSV Eindhoven, Marseille and Ajax.

Sporting, Liverpool, Chelsea, Barcelona, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur went through automatically alongside already qualified Arsenal and Bayern Munich.

But Borussia Dortmund are an unseeded side in the play-offs after losing 2-0 at home to Inter and they could now meet seeded team Bayer Leverkusen.

Dortmund v Leverkusen in play-offs?

The Werkself dealt easily with eliminated Villarreal 3-0 thanks to Malik Tillman's brace.

Asked about possibly facing Dortmund following Friday's play-off draw, Leverkusen coach Kasper Hjulmand told DAZN: "We'll see, we have played against Borussia Dortmund lots of times, so we'll see."

Newcastle - the only one of six English teams not to go straight to the last 16 - Inter, Atletico, Juventus and Atalanta are also seeded teams.

Barcelona were destined for the play-offs at half-time but came from behind to win 4-1 at home to eliminated Copenhagen.

Viktor Daðason's early goal stunned the Nou Camp but Robert Lewandowski's leveller, a deflected Lamine Yamal strike, Raphinha's penalty and Marcus Rashford's goal meant the five-times winners avoid the play-offs.

Erling Haaland netted early as City beat Galatasaray 2-0. Alexis Mac Allister's double, Florian Wirtz, Mo Salah, Hugo Ekitiké and Federico Chiesa powered Liverpool to a 6-0 win over Azerbaijan's Qarabag to also go straight through. Qarabag are an unseeded play-off team.

Tottenham won 2-0 at already eliminated Eintracht Frankfurt thanks to former Eagles man Randal Kolo Muani and Dominic Solanke. The Londoners have belied their poor Premier League form to make the Champions League last 16.

Arsenal finish top with 100% percent record

Arsenal and Bayern Munich both won having previously assured their automatic spots in the last 16.

The table-topping Gunners beat Kazakhstan's bottom side Kairat 3-2 to become the first side in two seasons of the new format to win all eight league phase games. In the old group stage, 13 sides did so.

The Bavarians won 2-1 at PSV, who bowed out. Jamal Musiala scored as he made his first start for Bayern since breaking his leg in July and Harry Kane grabbed the winner.

The knockout phase play-off draw is on Friday at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. Although the seeded and unseeded teams are known, clubs were paired to avoid possible manipulation with regards to their last 16 opponents and to still have the thrill of a draw.

The play-off first legs are on February 17 and 18.
