German military grows to highest level in 12 years

The size of the German military has grown to the highest level in 12 years with 184,200 serving soldiers, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius told dpa.
The Bundeswehr's active force rose by around 3,000 soldiers in 2025, the best recruitment figures in 15 years according to Pistorius.
Germany is seeking to boost troop numbers to 260,000 by the mid-2030s under new NATO targets agreed last year in the face of the rising threat from Russia following the invasion of Ukraine.
After months of tense debate, Chancellor Friedrich Merz's government reformed military service late last year, reintroducing mandatory medical examinations for men who also have to register on a list.
While active service is initially voluntary, it could be made compulsory if recruitment falls below the necessary targets.
Pistorius said the growing enlistment figures are a sign of trust in the Bundeswehr.
"Young people are increasingly willing to commit themselves to Germany's external security," the minister said.
"This makes me optimistic that in 2026, many motivated and committed men and women will choose to join the Bundeswehr – whether in civilian or military roles, whether in the new military service or serving for longer periods," he added.
A Defence Ministry spokesman said the German military urgently needs personnel, equipment and infrastructure in light of the security situation and NATO's new targets.
The requirements must be met for Germany to be able to make a significant contribution to deterrence and defence, he argued.
There have also been increased efforts to persuade soldiers to continue serving beyond their current term of service, with the aim of retaining highly qualified military personnel.
Around 8,500 soldiers agreed to extend their service in the Bundeswehr in 2025, an increase of 6% compared to the previous year.
