The German government has expressed its condolences following the deadly train accident in southern Spain.

Spokesman Stefan Kornelius said that Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his administration are "shocked by the news of the serious train accident."

"Our thoughts are with the families and relatives of the victims," he added. "We offer them our sincere condolences."

At least 39 people died in the incident on Sunday night, which saw two high-speed trains collide near the town of Adamuz in the Andalusian province of Córdoba, Spanish rail operator Renfe said.

A total of 73 people were treated at hospitals following the collision, including 24 who were seriously injured, broadcaster RTVE said.

Kornelius said the German government wishes the injured strength and a speedy recovery.

Germany stands by Spain at this time, he added.
