Bayern Munich were on fire on Sunday as they returned out of the Bundesliga winter break with a statement 8-1 thrashing of Wolfsburg and went 11 points clear at the top of the table.

Michael Olise had two goals and two assists, Luis Diaz a goal and three assists, Harry Kane a goal and an assist, with Raphael Guerreiro and Leon Goretzka also on target, plus own goals from Wolfsburg players Kilian Fischer and Moritz Jenz.

Dzenan Pejcinovic got a temporary equalizer for lowly Wolfsburg who only trailed 2-1 at the break before collapsing in the second half for their biggest defeat in Bundesliga history.

"It was fantastic and we must continue this way," Bayern captain Manuel Neuer told streaming portal DAZN. "Every player is important. We play to score and don't stop and conserve a lead. We want to show our best game."

Coach Vincent Kompany said after his 50th Bundesliga match in charge that results like this "are not a given. The first half was really not easy. But I always felt that we were close and that's what happened in the second half."

Wolfsburg's Fischer named the scoreline "embarrassing" and coach Daniel Bauer said that "we must apologise to our fans."

Bayern march on

Unbeaten Bayern rolled on to their 14th league victory, to go with two draws, and improved their extraordinary goal difference to +51 (63-12) before they reach the halfway mark of the season on Wednesday at Cologne.

Bayern are now 11 points ahead of Borussia Dortmund, who drew 3-3 at Eintracht Frankfurt on Friday as the only question appears to be when and not if they will win a 35th national title.

Borussia Mönchengladbach trounced lowly Augsburg 4-0 in the other game to move into 10th place. Joe Scally opened the scoring and Kevin Diks converted a penalty before Haris Tabakovic headed a brace.

Close first half

Bayern had started the season 6-0 against RB Leipzig and their restart took a similar course.

They took the lead in the fifth minute when a sharp Diaz cross from the left went in off the knee of Fischer under pressure from Olise.

Wolfsburg did not sit back and were awarded when Pejcinovic made the most of some space to net the equalizer into the far right corner off a perfect defence-splitting pass from Lovro Majer.

Bayern however were ahead again after half an hour when the unmarked Diaz headed home Olise's cross from the right, and they then took complete control in the second half.

Bayern score six after break

Olise ran to the centre from the right and curled into the far corner in the 50th, just like Arjen Robben had done many years ago.

Three minutes later Kane's long ball found Olise who crossed into the goalmouth where Diaz and Jenz slid in and Jenz got the last touch for 4-1.

Kane squared for Guerreiro to hit into the empty net in the 68th after a quickly executed free-kick and the England captain finally got on the scoresheet a minute later with a curling shot into the top corner for his 20th season goal. Olise in the 76th and Goretzka from a tight right angle in the 88th completed the rout.

The big win was also redemption after Bayern were held 2-2 by bottom club Mainz in their last home game of 2025.

"It tastes good. We wanted to play ourselves into the hearts again on a cold January day," Neuer said.
