Bayern's Karl backed by German icons after airing Real Madrid wish

Bayern Munich winger Lennart Karl received the backing of three German football luminaries after causing a minor storm by stating his dream of one day playing for Real Madrid.

In-form Karl, 17, has only broken into the Bayern first-team this season but raised alarm bells among supporters when he told a fan club on Sunday about his career goal.

"Of course Bayern are a very big club. It is a dream playing there. But one day I definitely want to go to Real Madrid. That is my dream club - but that stays between you and me," the German said with a smile.

Former Bayern and Germany star Lothar Matthäus defended the teenager in his column for broadcaster Sky.

"I think it's good when someone already has self-confidence at 17. Setting goals has nothing to do with arrogance. I find it honest, not arrogant or conceited."

Günter Netzer, who played for Madrid in the 1970s, told Bild: "He did not speak of a quick move, but of a dream. I think having Real as a goal is perfectly fine for a young player."

Former Madrid playmaker Bernd Schuster concurred.

"I think it's great that Lennart Karl expressed that so clearly. You should follow your dreams — even as a footballer. It's a good sign because it shows that you want to go all the way to the top," he said.

Karl has contributed six goals and two assists in 22 competitive matches so far this term. His contract in Munich runs until 2028 but according to Sky, it automatically extends on Karl's 18th birthday on February 22 by one year to 2029.
