Ukraine thanks Germany after deploying two new Patriot systems

1.01.2026, 14:21

Ukraine has received two more Patriot air defence systems to help fend off Russian attacks, the Defence Ministry said on Thursday, crediting Germany with facilitating the delivery.

The systems have already been deployed to protect Ukrainian cities and key infrastructure, "thanks to recent agreements with the German government," Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal said.

The US-made surface-to-air missile systems are Ukraine's best bet when it comes to defending against Russian ballistic and cruise missiles.

A Patriot system comprises various components such as a radar, a fire control station, antennas and launchers for the anti-aircraft missiles.

Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Kiev has received a number of Patriot systems from Western allies.

Germany has supplied three complete systems. Last August, the Defence Ministry in Berlin announced the gradual delivery of components for another two Patriots, while Norway said it would contribute funds.

In return, Germany would be supplied with the latest generation of Patriots from the United States.
