Germany urges stronger international efforts to end Sudan conflict

German Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan has urged stronger international efforts to end the conflict in Sudan, calling it the world's worst humanitarian crisis and warning it must not be overlooked.

"The reports and images we are receiving are deeply disturbing," Alabali Radovan told Germany's Funke media group outlets in remarks published on Wednesday.

She praised neighbouring countries for supporting millions of people who have fled Sudan since fighting erupted, but said humanitarian assistance alone was not enough.

"We urgently need a political solution, starting with a stable ceasefire," Alabali Radovan said. "That will not come about on its own in this terrible civil war. It requires immediate and greater support from the international community."

She warned that the conflict must not be forgotten.

Sudan has been gripped by war since April 2023, with fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The United Nations has described the conflict as the world's largest humanitarian crisis. Around 12 million people have been displaced and half the population faces hunger.

Despite the scale of the crisis, Sudan has received far less international attention than conflicts such as the war in Gaza.
